Comment: You know instead of sullivan making up this little utilities commision that they are doing, maybe an independent company should come in. I realize that bigger towns such as Washington have lots of money but, look at the industry they have over there. We pay higher utility bills than anyone around. The city is going to introduce another 1/2 cent tax increase, for people to vote on. OMG what a joke. Just for the people on here, the city used that hospital money to back a low intrest loan that they took out for the new over pass, which will be paid back by the 1/2 cent tax money. So no the money hasnt been used. The problem seems to be that the city waited just long enough for the sewer project that they had to use the money for the overpass first. How convenient, " oh no money so now we can raise the rates". We aren't buying all the bs they are handing out. I think that city hall is to used to people sitting back and letting them do what they want. Lets just hope that all the new council members don't just look out for their own kind. Maybe we should all move to West Sullivan. Could it get any worse. Ditch Witch went from Oak Grove to West Sullivan, maybe they see something we don't. |

Comment: I want to know if the Christmas Lighting Display Company near Sullivan has a web site or a phone number someone will answer. I wrote down the number painted on their building as I passed by on I-44, but all I have ever been able to get when dialing that number is a fax machine. I sent a fax, but it wasn's answered. Please respond to my e-mail address if you can help me contact them. |

Comment: Agreeing so much on some below comments. We DO need a new mayor. He isn't helping ANY of our town situations. Please someone GOOD run against him and get elected, and if you do get elected, don't bring your personal feelings about people in this town that you don't like to sway your vote on things. I think we all know what we mean on this too |

Comment: Rob, Sullivan has allready loaned itself the "hospital money" to build the Elmont overpass - while we wait for the 1/2 cent sales tax that was passed to pay for it over time - comes in to repay this internal loan. Sullivan does not have that money (Hospital sale) to use to offset things like sewer and water system fees. What we need is; more system users to help pay for these systems and or we need more sales tax revenues from more new stores to help offset cost of these services. Otherwise you will soon be looking at bigger property tax bills. I agree; the mayor has been part of the problem. Will someone decent sign up to run against him soon? We can only hope so, and that whoever runs against him is not just another rerun from the past. If so, either way, we will lose. Unless one of the new guys runs or someone entirely new to the situation who is smart enough to see what has caused these problems, it will be bad. So far, the current Mayor is running unoposed. That is not good. |

Comment: i have to agree with some of the prevoius comments about the city and the people in city hall... ther are alot they are dealing with from past councils members true but have you really watched all the council meetings? ther seems to be a few that want to look at every avenue that is available to help with cost but a few others that just want to push ahead.. i know several people that have worked hard all their life to retire that are now talking about finding jobs just to pay their living expenses... but everyone needs to be looked at at city hall evn the court collecter ...lets just say she is not a people friendly person |

Comment: Stephanie, why didnt you mention anything about the revenue the city has for the sale of the hospital? Wouldnt that be a place to start looking for some finances instead of its strapped city residents in the times of RECESSION. |

Comment: The comments about cleaning out city hall seem to miss the mark. If you look back, you might realize the current council is in fact cleaning house of problems that many-many previous councils casued or in some cases let go, which only cost more to deal with now. Don't kill the messenger or the current council because they (at least the newest members) inherited the mistakes of the past. They are making hard decisons to deal with those past mistakes while actually preparing for the future and even more problems yet too come, also caused by those past mistakes. The sewer treatment plant alone has a series of misteps to blame for the cost that is now being incurred. Not the least of which is refusing to create and accept every customer we can get, (to help pay the bills), losing out on grants and low interest loans due to stuborness of previous councils, not building it sooner because cost have increased signifincatly while all the indecision ensued. That is just on the sewer plant. Each problem the current council is dealing with has similar past mistakes which factor into the end result and the problems which now have to be dealt with which ended up costing us more. Just look around, the new Lowe's will take revenue away from the city next. Where will the shortfalls come from? Sales tax is the most important part of the total budget. When it comes to keeping cost city services stabilized. All things go up in cost, so if sales tax revenues go down due to Lowes, the city must find a way to increase users and sales tax revenues (mostly sales tax) somewhere else if it is to continue to provide the same level of services (police, streets, parks etc.). The pain may not be over, but don't blame the newest guys for it. They are - at least being realistic and not hiding the cost or putting things off. Now, let's try to get some more good people to run! Let's not go backward, by painting everyone with the same brush, kepp or bring back the old re-runs of the past. Doing so will only get us more of the same. |

Comment: I was in town for Christmas, first visit back in 7 months. Couldn't believe how much Sullivan changed so fast. It was great to see Our families, wish the visit could have been longer to see some friends also. Miss everyone. |
